Our mission is to make it easy to read and understand the Qur’an. ![]() Abu Bishr said: I said to Sa`id, “Some people claim that it (Al-Kauthar) is a river in Paradise.” Sa`id replied, “The river which is in Paradise is one item of that good which Allah has bestowed upon him (Muhammad). In Sahih Bukhari 4965, narrated by Ibn Abbas: The word ‘Al-Kauthar’ means the abundant good which Allah gave to him (the Prophet (ﷺ) Muhammad). My Ummah will come to me, then a man among them will be pulled away and I will say: “O Lord, he is one of my Ummah” and He will say to me: ‘You do not know what he did after you were gone.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i 904) Its vessels are more than the number of the stars. For he who hates you, he will be cut off.’ Then he said: ‘Do you know what Al-Kawthar is?’ We said: ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said: ‘It is a river that my Lord has promised me in Paradise. Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only). Verily, We have granted you (O Muahmmad) Al-Kawthar. We said to him: ‘Why are you smiling, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘Just now this Surah was revealed to me: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. It was narrated that Anas in Malik said: “One day when he-the Prophet (ﷺ) was still among us, he took a nap, then he raised his head, smiling. When he dies, there will be no one to remember him.” This surah was revealed to assure Prophet (ﷺ) that he will have “abundant goodness” which is literally the meaning of Al-Kauthar. As bin Wa’il as-Sehmi, the chief of Mecca, used to say: “Let him alone for he is only a childless man (in Arabic referred to as “abtar”) with no male offspring. ![]() At the time having a son was power, the lineage, tribe, and the family name carries on. This Surah was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) at a time where the opposition would mock and insult him for not bearing any children.
